Is "I Don't Remember Saying That" Gaslighting?

It can be an honest memory gap. It becomes manipulation when the forgetting is convenient, happens every time, and leaves you carrying the burden of proof.

What it means

Everyone forgets conversations, especially ones from a stressful week. On its own, the sentence is an ordinary statement about memory.

What matters is the pattern. Memory is selective in real life, but it does not usually forget only the promises, only the insults or only the things that would be inconvenient to remember.

When it is manipulation

When it is not

Stress, tiredness, a busy period and plain forgetfulness are all real. A person acting in good faith responds to "here is the message" with something like "I may have said it, I'm sorry".

If the response to evidence is openness, even awkward openness, the forgetting was honest. The reaction to proof tells you more than the original claim.

Three calm replies

You are not trying to win the argument about the past. You are trying to keep a shared record and act on it.

Reply 1: give your version, move forward

"That's okay. Here is what I remember, and I'd like us to plan around it."

Reply 2: check together

"I wrote it down that day. Can we look at the message together?"

Reply 3: accept the difference

"We remember it differently. I'm going to act on what I wrote down."
