Is "I Was Just Joking" Gaslighting or Not?

Sometimes it is exactly that. It is manipulation when the "joke" keeps landing on the same sore spot, you have said it hurts, and your hurt is then treated as the problem.

What it means

A joke gives the speaker deniability. If you object, the answer is "I was just joking", which moves the issue from what they said to how you reacted. The comment already did its work, and you are the one left looking humorless.

That is why it is not the phrase itself that matters. It is what the joke targets, how often, and what happens after you object.

When it is manipulation

When it is not

Shared humor is different. If both people laugh, if the jokes can go in both directions and if either can say "that one is too much" and have it respected, it is simply humor.

A clumsy joke that misses is also normal. What shows good faith is what comes next: "sorry, that came out wrong" and no repeat.

Three calm replies

No need to explain why it wasn't funny or justify your sense of humor.

Reply 1: clear and short

"I didn't find that funny. Please leave that topic out."

Reply 2: no laughter, no argument

"I'm not laughing, and I'd like it to stop."

Reply 3: minimal

"That one doesn't work for me."
