Why Are You Making a Big Deal of It: Gaslighting?
Not automatically, but it is minimization: someone else deciding how much your hurt is allowed to weigh. Repeated over time, it teaches you to stop mentioning things.
What it means
The question sounds like curiosity and works like a verdict. It declares your reaction too large for the event and invites you to shrink it. The event itself, what actually happened, is never examined.
Because it is phrased as a question, it is hard to answer without sounding defensive. Any reply you give has to justify your feelings, and that is the trap.
When it is manipulation
- Almost any issue you raise is "a big deal", no matter how it is raised.
- They decide the size of the problem, and you are not asked.
- The topic is never discussed, only the fact that you brought it up.
- You apologize for raising things, or you stop raising them.
- Small things pile up because nothing ever gets resolved, and then the pile is held against you.
When it is not
Sometimes a person really does see something as small and says so, and still listens. That is a difference of opinion, not manipulation.
It can also be a genuine request for proportion in a stressful moment, or a tired reaction from someone who has heard about the same topic many times. The test is whether they are willing to talk about it once you say it matters.
Three calm replies
You do not have to prove that the matter is big enough. It is enough that it matters to you.
"It matters to me. I'd like us to talk about it."
"It may be small for you. It isn't for me, and that's enough reason to bring it up."
"I'm keeping it simple: I'd like you to stop doing this. Can we agree on that?"
What to look for in the conversation
- Who decides the size of the problem, and whether you ever get a say.
- Whether the topic gets discussed after you say it matters.
- Whether you have started raising fewer issues to avoid the reaction.
- Whether the same minimizing language appears across different subjects.
- Whether unresolved small things later become evidence that you are "dramatic".
